Iconic Olympic figure skating champ Scott Hamilton underwent brain surgery in Boston on Wednesday.
Doctors successfully removed a benign tumor near his pituitary gland, called craniopharyngioma, in a surgery early this morning. The tumor first surfaced in 2004, seven years after Hamilton was treated for testicular cancer. It was treated with a Gamma Knife, which delivers measured doses of gamma radiation, but was never completely destroyed, Hamilton’s rep tells PEOPLE Magazine.
Hamilton, 51, is expected to make a full recovery. He is surrounded by his wife Tracie, brother Steve, and several family friends.
The Ice Man won the gold in Men’s Figure Skating at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics.
