The Wall Street Journal reports Wednesday that McDonald’s may drop health insurance for almost 30,000 hourly restaurant workers.
Trade groups representing retailers and restaurants say the pushback comes because of a government requirement for “mini-med” plans, according to the Wall Street Journal. Benefits for about 1.4 million workers are provided by those plans, according to the Journal.
“The requirement concerns the percentage of premiums that must be spent on benefits,” reports the Journal.
Many restaurants do not provide health coverage. This possible drop in coverage by McDonald’s is a consequence of the health reform law passed earlier this year.
