Film fans are ending the Thanksgiving Weekend on a somber note. Actor/comedian Leslie Nielsen passed away of complications of pneumonia at a hospital near his home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Sunday.
The Canadian-born star had been hospitalized for almost two weeks before his death, according to his nephew, Doug Nielsen, who confirmed news of his death to Manitoba, Canada radio station CJOB this afternoon.
“Today at 5:30 with his friends and his wife by his side, he just fell asleep and passed away. It’s very sad. But he died peacefully, surrounded by his friends, his family and his wife.”
The famous funnyman was originally known for serious roles in films like The Poseidon Adventure, but Nielsen’s career began to take a more comical turn with his starring role in the 1980 Star Trek spoof Airplane! He went on to appear alongside a pre-homicidal OJ Simpson and Priscilla Presley in the popular Naked Gun comedies that shattered the box office in the late ’80s and also enjoyed roles in the third and fourth installments of Scary Movie.
Leslie Nielsen was 84.
