Obama Silent On Marriage Equality In State Of The Union Address

Posted by Darby On January - 26 - 2011

In last night’s State of the Union address President Obama had very little to say about marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples.  His focus was on strengthening the economy and improving innovation to gain an edge in the global economy.  Despite his deafening silence on marriage equality he did make reference to the most recent and important accomplishments for gay rights, repealing 1993’s “don’t’ ask don’t tell” policy.  In his speech Obama said “Our troops come from every corner of this country — they are black, white, Latino, Asian and Native American. They are Christian and Hindu, Jewish, and Muslim. And, yes, we know that some of them are gay, Starting this year, no American will be forbidden from serving the country they love because of who they love.”  It is an important step in the right direction, but is a far cry from full equality in every aspect of life for the gay and lesbian community.   The question is how do we have more influence on President Obama for marriage equality for 2012’s presidential election according to Socarides “press him at every turn, and do so creatively and strategically.”
