Yesterday Flynews reported on the brutal murder of David Kato, a gay rights activist in Uganda. Last night both President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the atrocious act. Clinton stated that Kato’s death “underscores how critical it is that both the government and the people of Uganda, along with the international community, speak out against the discrimination, harassment, and intimidation of Uganda’s LGBT community.” President Obama said he was deeply saddened by Kato’s murder and how he was a “powerful advocate for fairness and freedom.” Obama also included in his statement “LGBT rights are not special rights; they are human rights. My Administration will continue to strongly support human rights and assistance work on behalf of LGBT persons abroad. We do this because we recognize the threat faced by leaders like David Kato, and we share their commitment to advancing freedom, fairness, and equality for all.” Supporting gay rights abroad as human rights is fantastic, but President Obama we need to have them supported here at home as well. A good start would be by banning gay hate groups like Westboro Baptist Church from protesting funerals of our brave service men and little girls like Christina Green. They hide behind the freedom of speech, but they only have freedom of speech when they do not take away rights of other people. Grieving families have the right to bury their departed love ones in peace which is being taken away by these monsters when the protest funerals.

Banning someone just because you disagree with their message would set a terrible precedent, in fact it could be used against the gay community by a president who is not gay-friendly by saying people have the right to peace on the streets so gay people can never have another gay rights parade. I fully believe that Westboro Church is wrong, but if we took away their rights we would be just as wrong.

Copa I understand your point about them having the right to protest and I fully support their right to protest. However, they can not imped the right of mourners to bury their dead loved ones in peace, and that is exactly what Westboro Baptist Church is doing when they protest these funerals.
