Mel Gibson has plead no contest to misdemeanor battery charges in a Jan. 2010 incident involving his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. Gibson is accused of shattering the Russian-born singer’s teeth in a fit of rage.
As part of the plea deal, Mel avoids jail time and has been placed on 36 months of probation. The Oscar-winning father of eight will also have to complete 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling in a program he previously enrolled in. Gibson — who set off a firestorm of controversy when audiotapes of him berating Grigorieva in vicous phonecalls emered online last year — must also perform 16 hours of community service with Mending Kids International.
Blair Berk, Mel’s attorney, announced that the star was not entering the plea as an admission of guilt, but “because it’s in the best interest of his children.”
