Harvey Milk is still championing gay rights from the grave. Several LGBT activists have launched a campaign to have Milk’s mug shot on a stamp. The campaign is led by Michael Gaffney and Nicole Murray-Ramirez. David Mixner writes on his blog, DavidMixner.com, what he believes Milk’s response would be “He would get that twisted smile of his face and say, ‘Hell, imagine all those straights having to lick my backside to send a piece of mail.’”
The stamp is meant to commemorate Milk and the effect his life had for gay rights. Others involved in the Harvey Milk stamp campaign are the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Milk’s nephew Stuart Milk, Dustin Lance Black (the Oscar-winning screen writer of Milk), John Perez (the California assembly speaker), Milk associate Cleve Jones, and the Reverend Troy Perry. These are some heavy hitters. I hope the stamp is approved. I think Harvey Milk is a hero for unashamedly standing up for who he was and encouraging others to do the same.
