New York city is a buzz with gay marriage fever. Yesterday two different demonstrations took place to push for marriage equality. The minor demonstration took place at Grand Central Station where 10 drag queens performed mock same-sex weddings to raise awareness of gay marriage rights.
The main action however took place outside of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office building during rush hour traffic. Five people from Queer Rising blocked traffic by handcuffing themselves together and carrying a huge ass banner reading “Marriage Equality NOW! Call Cuomo: 518-474-8390!!!” They all were arrested for the “disturbance.” The protestors were Natasha Dillon (26, lesbian activist); Kevin Donohue (51, gay Jewish activist); Melissa Kleckner (31, straight ally); Ali Lozano (20, lesbian student activist); and Robert Moore (30, gay Mormon activist).
Towleroad has indicated these demonstrations are part of a series direct actions designed to try and influence the New York Legislature to pass marriage equality into law.
