Tuesday on The Glenn Beck Program, Glenn Beck he didn’t understand why people thing homophobia is rampant in the Republican Party. Maybe it’s because the religious right wing evangelicals have claimed the Republican Party as the political party of all “good Christians”, or maybe it’s because opposition to marriage equality is predominately backed by Republicans, and let’s not forget about their opposition to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) to recognize full equality in the military. These are just a few thoughts that come to mind to explain why the Republican Party is riddled with homophobia.
Glenn Beck started talking about Wyoming senator, Alan Simpson’s, statement “We have homophobes in our party. That’s disgusting to me,” in his Hardball interview with MSNBC’s Chis Matthews. DADT was used as an example. Beck couldn’t resist the chance to point out DADT was enacted on the Democrats watch by President Bill Clinton. That is true, but at the time it was a step in the right direction for gay rights to allow gay service members to even be in the military.
Beck then turned his attention to Simpson’s remarks on Rick Santorum “has said some cruel things, cruel, cruel things about homosexuals.” Beck mockingly said “What did he say?” and never elaborated on Santorum’s commenst which compared homosexuality to “man on dog” sex and saying children adopted by gay people are in danger. I would call those cruel statements.
Beck with statements and attitudes like the ones that have just been described you tell me why the Republican Party has the image of being homophobes.
