What says “Happy Easter” better than an interview with Rick Santorum telling America that marriage is a privilege and not a right? On Easter Sunday Fox News’s Chris Wallace had an interview with Rick Santorum. During the interview Wallace referred to Santorum as a “Cultural Warrior.” Santorum said he was campaigning on all the issues not just gay marriage.
Santorum said he was against, gay marriage, civil unions, and wants to reinstate Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT). Then he turns around and says “People can live their lives however they want to, but what are you going to do to try and impact public policy to recognize particular relationships.” These two ideas diametrically opposed to each other. It is impossible to oppose every form of gay union and then say people can live their lives however they want just as long as they do not change public policy. That is like saying you oppose suicide and then give a manic-depressive a loaded gun.
According to Santorum marriage is a special relationship that offers an “exceptional and unique benefit,” but should only be limited to being between a man and a woman. He also says the purpose of marriage should be to obtain children. Let’s make sure only the missionary position is used as well. Marriage whether between a man, and a woman, two men, two women, or a gorilla and a baboon can offer the same “exceptional and unique benefit” to society because it is a marriage according to your own words.
Santorum needs to understand that an institution like marriage is a right and not a privilege. Excluding same sex couples from marriage is wrong because they are being treated unequally. In order for everyone to be equal marriage should not be recognized for anyone, or is should be recognized for everyone. Only then will everyone be treated equal under the law. Considering marriage isn’t going anywhere the only logical conclusion to achieve equality is allowing everyone to get married whether gay or straight.
