Apple fans will be pleased to know their favorite manufacturer has not escaped “the mill.” Rumors say an Apple iPad 3 release date is expected sometime this year — perhaps as soon as March. In addition to the iPad 3 rumors, sources say the iPhone 5 may finally surface in late 2012. Of course, techie’s were expected the iPhone 5 last year, and even before the iPad 2 was released there was talk of an iPad 3. Apparently Appleites are never fully satisfied, but always looking for the next big thing.

iPad 3 specs predictions have been made, and apparently the tablet is expected to contain the next-generation Apple A6 system-on-a-chip. Apple uses similar chips in the iPad 2, Apple TV and iPhone 4/4S, so unless something better is being conjured up, analysts are set on this chip. The A6 will mean robust gaming, better multitasking, and faster video.

Also, since Apple decided against 4G LTE for the iPhone 4S could they be skipping over this technology in the iPad 3? Apparently LTE was left out because it would negatively affect battery life, but since a tablet would have higher battery capacity; 4G LTE would likely be included in iPad 3 specs.

Will the iPad 3 have a Retina display? While many thought the iPad 2 would have such a display, Apple lovers who were holding out for such a display were let down. However, according to rumor the iPad 3 may have a Retina display. Sources say Apple may rely on Samsung or LG for displays which may give the iPad 3 the same resolution as found on the iPhone 4S.

Since Apple has not confirmed an iPad 3 release date, consumers shouldn’t hold high hopes just yet. Still… one can dream.

Not much has been disclosed about the device thus far since both Motorola and Intel are keeping quiet on the design, cost, and name of the Android Smartphone. However, Intel has disclosed the first of its processors used by Motorola would be the new Atom Z2460, a 1.6-gigahertz, which they say has integrated graphics capabilities and a low power consumption.

Still no word on which wireless carrier will offer the Motorola Intel Smartphone, but this will likely add to all the hype, mystery, and rumors.

Does it really matter anyway? Before the handset is even released something better will come along!

YouTube is broken. This morning I was going to post Lady Gaga Judas video. When I went to get the embed code from YouTube I found it was not there for any video, even a video of a dog. YouTube WTF? How do you expect videos to be shared if we cannot get the embed code to share them?

I know this is a rant, but being able to share videos from YouTube on FlyNews is critical. How can I do my job if the damn tools are broken? Ok time to turn the mic. over to the readers. Buzz no more: Yahoo is discontinuing their Buzz feature, a Digg-like application for sharing news.

“Yahoo! Buzz will be discontinued as of April 21, 2011. As of this date, you will be unable to access the Yahoo! Buzz site. This was a hard decision. However this will help us focus on our core strengths and new innovations,” Yahoo wrote.

Buzz, which was introduced in 2008, let users share photo uploads, status changes, or recommended news stories through a button. That button could also be added to other web pages to enable further sharing.

Buzz is not the first casualty of the company’s recent streamlining efforts: bookmarking site Delicious (which is trying to separate from Yahoo and run independently), site tracker MyBlogLog and others were all revealed to be sunsetting through a slide show leaked in December.

“Part of our organizational streamlining involves cutting our investment in underperforming or off-strategy products to put better focus on our core strengths and fund new innovation in the next year and beyond,” Yahoo said at the time.

The company has also laid off over 700 workers, while trying to turn the site around. They are expected to post a decline in profits when reporting first-quarter earnings this Tuesday.

Apple’s pulling out the big guns against Samsung.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has filed suit against Samsung for patent and trademark infringement.

Apple alleges that Samsung has purposely modeled several of its Android products after Apple’s hit iPad and iPhone devices.

Among the offenders are Samsung’s Galaxy line of tablets and smartphones. Apple claims that the design, hardware, and interface features of Samsung’s gadgets too closely resemble those of iDevices.

“It’s no coincidence that Samsung’s latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging,” an Apple rep told All Things D. “This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple’s intellectual property when companies steal our ideas.”

Thursday the gay employees of Apple did a six minute “It Gets Better” video and submitted it to YouTube. Saturday morning YouTube yanked it for violating its “policy on depiction of harmful activities.” To help clarify this policy Mac Observer’s Bryan Chafin wrote “YouTube’s community guideline tips offer some very general suggestions on the kinds of videos that might be rejected, including categories labeled ‘Sex and Nudity,’ ‘Hate Speech,’ Shocking and Disgusting,’ ‘Dangerous Illegal Acts,’ ‘Children,’ ‘Copyright,’ ‘Privacy,’ ‘Harassment,’ ‘Impersonation,’ and ‘Threats.’” The video has now been put back on YouTube.

I have seen the video and there was absolutely nothing about it which warranted being yanked off YouTube. The Apple employees talk about their personal experiences. Just like all it gets better stories they share how depressed and lonely they were. Then they transition into how things got better, and offered a message of hope to everyone who is gay and feeling rejected. The depressed parts of these people’s stories were necessary. In no way did they depict “‘Sex and Nudity, Hate Speech, Shocking and Disgusting, Dangerous Illegal Acts, Children, Copyright, Privacy, Harassment, Impersonation, and Threats.” YouTube should be ashamed of themselves.

How a video offering a message of hope to people who really need it could be considered harmful is far beyond me. YouTube is showing intolerance with this shameful act. They should offer a public apology and undergo mandatory sensitivity training. Exhibiting this kind of bigotry at the corporate level is inexcusable, and is a sure fire way to make the public start losing faith in a company. Doing the act and then saying “oops just kidding” is two faced. YouTube has to do something to make amends.

Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss cannot back out of a settlement with social networking giant Facebook over claims that company founder Mark Zuckerberg stole their idea, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Monday.

The Winklevoss twins, along with Divya Narendra, had agreed to release their claims, but later claimed the settlement had been procured by fraud. A lower court had granted Facebook’s request to enforce the settlement.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld that ruling on Monday.

Beginning April 17, Verizon Wireless will stop offering single-year contracts for new mobile customers.

Current yearlong subscribers will not immediately be affected, a Verizon rep told Computerworld.

When existing one-year contracts expire, however, those customers will have a choice between Big Red’s two-year and month-to-month options.

According to an internal memo, published by Gadget University, Verizon is cancelling its yearly contract offering because of low demand from non-business customers.

“The greater majority of customers sign up for a two-year contract and take advantage of the discounted promotion price,” Verizon explained to Computerworld.

There is one exception to Verizon’s new policy: business and government accounts will still have the option of selecting yearlong plans.

In terms of customer satisfaction, both carriers ranked about the same.

Verizon’s satisfaction rate was slightly higher, with 82 percent of customers polling “very satisfied” and 16 percent “somewhat satisfied in March 2011. By contrast, 80 percent of AT&T customers said they were “very satisfied” and 18 percent said they were “somewhat satisfied.”

The real difference is in the number of dropped calls reported by customers from each carrier. ChangeWave’s data shows that Verizon customers reported far fewer dropped calls within the same 90-day time frame.

While AT&T users said that the network dropped 4.8 percent of their total calls, “Big Red” users reported a 1.8-percent dropped call rate.

ChangeWave’s study also found that 46 percent of future iPhone 4 buyers said they planned to sign on with Verizon. Twenty-seven percent said they would sign a contract with AT&T. The remaining 27 percent chose another carrier or weren’t sure which they’d choose.

Within these parpameters, Verizon emerges the victor.

However, a speed test completed by Ookla in February found that the iPhone 4 performed better on AT&T’s network.

“The AT&T iPhone’s average download speed was 1,769 Kbps, and the average upload speed was 730 Kbps. By way of comparison, the Verizon iPhone’s average download speed was 848 Kbps, and the average upload speed was 506 Kbps,” reported Ookla.

If it’s speed you need, AT&T will probably satisfy. If it’s stability you crave, Verizon seems a safer bet.
