Want lovers to answers your call? Trade in that Blackberry for an iPhone.

At least that’s the 411 from the online dating and social networking service OKCupid. Its fun but decidedly unscientific poll of 9,785 smartphone users found that iPhone owners have a lot more sex partners than owners of any other smartphone, CNET reports.

Blackberry users are in second place in the sex race and Android users are lagging in third, according to the poll of 30-year-old smartphone owners.

Who had the most sexual partners?

Females iPhone users; they had an average of 12.3 sex partners. Female Android owers had only 6.1 sex partners on average, and female Blackberry owners 8.8 sex partners.

Among men, iPhone users reported having 10 sex partners, compared to 8.1 sex partners for Blackberry owners.

And how many sex partners did male Android owners have? Just six.

Talk about wrong number.

Evidence continues to mount to support expectations that Apple's iPhone 4 will finally launch on Verizon this coming January.

Evidence continues to mount to support expectations that Apple’s iPhone 4 will finally launch on Verizon this coming January.

The latest: Sources close to Apple’s hardware suppliers say that Apple has ordered millions of CDMA chipsets from Qualcomm. CDMA is the wireless technology used by Verizon.

The report comes from TechCrunch contributor Steve Cheney, who says that the chipsets are due in December, implying a January launch for the Verizon device. This follows a rumor from seven months ago that Qualcomm had landed a deal to provide Apple with chips.

You might also recall that AT&T dedicated a significant portion of its recent SEC filing to assurances that it would be a-okay without U.S. iPhone exclusivity, a probable sign that the carrier is expecting to lose said exclusivity before the original 5-year deal runs its course.

TechCrunch doesn’t disclose any details about its sources for this rumor; it describes them only as “sources with knowledge of this entire situation,” a reference to the long chain of manufacturers from Apple on down through Qualcomm and other component-makers.

The January release date was supported by an earlier, less-specific report from Bloomberg about a coming Verizon iPhone.

Some surveys have predicted that as many as half of Verizon’s current customers will abandon their current phones for the iPhone if it becomes available to them.

If this rumor pans out, will you be abandoning your current Verizon phone for an iPhone? Or if you’re an existing iPhone customer, will you drop AT&T and make the move to Verizon when it gets the iPhone?

Even before Amazon.com announced its third-generation Kindle July 28, speculation abounded about what new features the online retailer would add to the device,

Even before Amazon.com announced its third-generation Kindle July 28, speculation abounded about what new features the online retailer would add to the device, in order to better compete against the likes of Barnes & Noble’s Nook and the Apple iPad.

On the furthest edge of that speculation, some suggested that Amazon would introduce multi-touch capabilities, or even a color screen. But the unveiled Kindle demonstrates Amazon’s continued focus on the basic e-reading experience: the screen has 50 percent better contrast, the body is smaller and lighter, the storage capacity has doubled—and new bells-and-whistles have been kept to a minimum.

Both the third-generation Kindle, which retails for $189, and the new Kindle Wi-Fi, which retails for $139, will ship Aug. 27.

Now the question becomes: What’s Amazon planning next? Fortunately, the new Kindle comes with a handful of “experimental” features, which in turn could provide a few clues.

“The experimental category represents features we are still working on to enhance the Kindle experience even further,” reads a note on Amazon’s Kindle page. “Try them out and let us know what you think.”

Those features include Read-To-Me, a text-to-speech feature that can “read English newspapers, magazines, blogs, and books out loud to you, unless the book’s rights holder made this feature unavailable.” A Voice Guide can read aloud the Kindle’s menu options, home-screen content listings, and item descriptions.

Other features include the Webkit-based browser, which is apparently free to use over Wi-Fi, and the ability to listen to music and podcasts. “Transfer MP3 files to Kindle to play as background music while you read,” suggests Amazon’s note. “You can quickly and easily transfer MP3 files via USB by connecting Kindle to your computer.” Amazon also offers free access to Wikipedia.

Is Amazon experimenting with making the Kindle more of a tablet PC? Or are these new features merely a way of augmenting the basic e-reading experience? Both Amazon and Barnes & Noble, which produces the rival Nook e-reader, have been augmenting their devices’ operating systems over the past few months; the Nook now offers Android-based games, for example, while the newest Kindle software allows users to share select passages from e-books via Twitter and Facebook.

But analysts acknowledge that Amazon’s greatest threat in the category could be the Apple iPad. With that device’s ownership base recently estimated by one analyst to exceed that of the Kindle’s, and other tablet PCs in manufacturers’ pipelines, Amazon could very well intend to build out the Kindle’s functionality—via a browser, and other Web-centric features—in a way that appeals to bibliophiles on the fence.

However, should Amazon decide to buttress the Kindle’s future editions with additional features, it runs into another issue: cost. After Barnes & Noble decided to radically reduce the price of its Nook e-readers in June, Amazon found itself caught in a spiraling price war; its new Kindle’s price matches that of the Nook, but the Kindle WiFi undercuts the similarly stripped-down Nook WiFi by $10.

“With these cuts, eBook readers from Barnes & Noble as well as Amazon now are priced at about the breakeven level with their Bill of Materials (BOM) and manufacturing costs,” William Kidd, director and principal analyst of financial services for iSuppli, wrote in a June 24 statement following price-dips for both the Nook and Kindle. “With zero profits on their hardware, both these companies now hope to make their money in this market through sale of books.”

Adding more tablet-like features has the potential to drive the Kindle’s per-unit costs to unacceptable levels; in which case, Amazon may feel inclined to pursue its current strategy: battle the iPad and competitors such as the Nook by offering a more refined e-reading experience.

A defiant Steve Jobs argued that the brouhaha over the iPhone 4's so-called death grip has been "blown so out of proportion, it's incredible." Still, in an effort to make every iPhone customer happy

A defiant Steve Jobs argued that the brouhaha over the iPhone 4’s so-called death grip has been “blown so out of proportion, it’s incredible.” Still, in an effort to make every iPhone customer happy, Apple (as expected) will hand out free cases — either Apple’s $29 Bumpers or a “choice” of third-party cases — for any iPhone 4 users who wants one.

Jobs didn’t admit that there was anything wrong with the new iPhone’s external antenna design — indeed, he called the new iPhone “perhaps the best product” Apple’s ever made — but he conceded that perhaps the lack of cases for the redesigned iPhone might have something to do with complaints about iffy reception.

Users who already have an Apple Bumper case can apply for a refund, Jobs said, adding that anyone who wants to return a new iPhone 4 for a full refund can do so within 30 days, without a restocking fee. Apple will continue handing out free cases until Sept. 30, at which point it will “re-evaluate” the situation.

Jobs kicked off the news conference by defending the iPhone 4 as “perhaps the best product we’ve ever made at Apple,” noting that more than 3 million new iPhones had been sold in just three weeks and that it has the “highest customer satisfaction rating” of any previous iPhone model. “Users seem to love it.”

“Antennagate” (as Jobs called it) is not unique to the iPhone 4, Apple’s CEO continued. He then proceeded to show videos of how phones such as the BlackBerry Bold 9700, the HTC Droid Eris and the Samsung Omnia II all began dropping bars when gripped. “Phones aren’t perfect. It’s a challenge for the whole industry.”

Jobs then touted Apple’s “state of the art,” $100 million testing facility, complete with 17 “anechoic” chambers staffed by 18 PhD-holding scientists and engineers, before claiming that just 0.55 percent of iPhone 4 users had called Apple to complain about reception problems, while only 1.7 percent of AT&T customers had returned their new phones (compared with 6 percent for the iPhone 3GS). “This is not a large number. This doesn’t jibe with what you read.”

Still, Jobs did concede that the iPhone 4 drops more calls than last year’s 3GS — but only a little less than one additional call per hundred, he claimed.

“Even less than one” additional dropped call “is too much for us,” Jobs went on, adding that he has his own “pet theory”: that because of the iPhone 4’s all-new design, only 20 percent of customers left the store with new cases, compared with (he claims) 80 percent for previous iPhone models.

During a question-and-answer period after the briefing, Jobs denied that he’d been warned in advance of possible iPhone 4 reception problems, and said a recent Bloomberg story containing the claim was a “crock.”

Jobs said Apple was “stunned and embarrassed” by Consumer Reports’ decision to withhold a recommendation for the iPhone 4 after duplicating the reception problem in a lab. He said Apple decided to wait till now before going into more detail about the iPhone’s reception issues because “we didn’t know enough” before.

Reception problems have been dogging the iPhone 4 pretty much since the day of its release, with many users complaining that the iPhone’s signal bars drop out if they hold the phone near the lower left corner. It didn’t take long before wireless experts blamed the iPhone’s redesigned antenna, which is built into the stainless steel band that rings the phone.

Apple claims the new design gives the iPhone 4 the best overall reception of any previous iPhone. But experts believe that when a tiny gap on the lower left side of the phone that separates the two segments of the iPhone antenna is “bridged” by a hand, reception problems are sure to follow.

Adding fuel to the fire was Steve Jobs himself, who told a handful of iPhone 4 users over e-mail that they could avoid reception problems if they’d “just avoid holding that way.”

Apple initially tried to explain away the complaints by blaming the iPhone’s “totally wrong” signal display algorithm, which it claimed was showing too many bars of reception in low-signal areas. A patch to fix the issue came out Thursday.

But if anything, the controversy over the iPhone 4 “death grip” only intensified after Apple’s initial announcement, culminating earlier this week when Consumer Reports (which initially posted a positive review of the iPhone) said it had proved in a lab that the “death grip” was real and would therefore not be recommending the (otherwise highly rated) handset.

On Thursday, both Bloomberg News and the Wall Street Journal claimed that Steve Jobs may have known as early as last year that the iPhone 4’s new design could lead to reception problems, but decided to plunge ahead with the new look anyway. Apple flatly denied the reports.

Update: In an earlier version of this post, I wrote that Jobs was “unapologetic” during his iPhone remarks Friday. In fact, he did say during the Q&A that he was “deeply sorry” if any customers were affected by reception problems.

According to some unconfirmed reports, Apple has acquired Poly9 Group – a Canadian online mapping startup that creates 3-D global maps. The Poly9 acquisition essentially merges with Apple’s last year buyout of mapping service Placebase.

Though there has been no confirmation of the acquisition by either Apple or Poly9, a report at French site Cyberpress. ca has revealed that Poly9, which was shuttered in June-end, with most of its staff relocated to Apple’s Cupertino campus.

Internet users are familiar with Poly9, which is the developer of Poly9 Globe – the 3D, flash-based representation that can have data and mapping information plotted onto it in a manner similar to Google Earth. Poly9 is also known for fueling NORAD’s holiday tracking of Santa Claus’s yearly expedition around the world.

With the acquisition of Poly9, Apple has thus far, ever since its 1976 founding, acquired 28 companies – picking up smaller companies, from time to time, to suit its strategic planning -, though it has largely preferred developing its own products and technologies.

However, noting that with the intensifying competition in the smartphone arena Apple needs to acquire talent to face pressures from competitors like Google, Kevin Burden, an analyst with ABI Research, said: “If they’re going to keep pace and remain an innovation leader, they’re realizing they can’t build everything in Cupertino all the time. They have to bring in more targeted technologies.”

Two weeks after a “stunned” Apple announced to the world that it had found a major software glitch in the iPhone’s signal-strength display, Apple plans to hold a press conference to discuss the iPhone 4.

The gathering will take place Friday at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters. An Apple spokesman declined to divulge any further details of the event.

IPhone customers are still waiting for the software update that Apple promised to release “within a few weeks” to address the way iPhones display the bars used to measure signal strength.

But Apple’s headaches continue mounting: On Monday, Consumer Reports’ product testers issued a damning report concluding that the iPhone 4 has a hardware design flaw that can cause calls to drop. There’s an easy fix — put the phone in a case or cover the gap between the phone’s two antennas with a bit of duct tape — but Consumer Reports said it would not recommend the phone until Apple released a free solution for the problem.

Apple has refused to comment on Consumer Reports’ findings, and has previously denied that the iPhone 4 has any hardware flaws. CEO Steve Jobs’ now-famous response to a customer complaint that holding the phone the wrong way could interrupt reception was “just avoid holding it in that way.”

The iPhone 4 was Apple’s most successful product launch in its history. The company sold 1.7 million phones in just the first three days, and the device remains sold out through most retailers. Even as it slapped the phone with a “not recommended” label, Consumer Reports said that the iPhone 4 was, aside from its antenna defect, the best smart phone on the market.

Actor Jason Bateman has apologized to Apple fans who were left fuming when he cut to the front of a long line to pick up a new iPhone 4 last Thursday.

The “Up In The Air” star was among an estimated 2,000 people who had lined up outside the Apple store at The Grove in Hollywood last week when an Apple employee noticed him in line and allowed him to walk straight into the shop to purchase a phone, which had gone on sale earlier that morning.

Apple fanatics were livid and booed and jeered as Bateman’s celebrity status won him special treatment. The actor originally blamed the paparazzi for his prompting his jump, but on Tuesday, he took to his Twitter page to publicly apologize for the controversy.

“Correction – If there were boos, I didn’t hear them. If some were mad, I didn’t see them. I wish I had. If you’re out there, I’m sorry.”

According to a Boy Genius Report today… leaked documunets show that AppleCare representatives are being the order to deliver a load of BS to unhappy iPhone 4 owners who complain about reception issues.

The report alleges that employees are being told to say that the device’s reception performance “is the best we have ever shipped” and that its critical antenna flaws are “a fact of life in the wireless world.” They are told not to perform service on iPhones with these problems and instead to give customers a PR-driven recitative instead.

In a nutshell, Apple knows the phone has problems but will insist that users are simply “holding it wrong.”

These statements not only indite cover-up issues through out the ranks of Apple Inc, but also proves the falsehoods of CEO Steve Jobs’ own assertions that the iPhone 4 antenna and reception issues do not, in fact, exist. “There is no reception issue,” he told one user. But the very fact that this document exists suggests that Apple execs know there is indeed a widespread hardware flaw, even if they’re unwilling to address it publicly at this time.

Shame… Shame… Everybody knows your name!

One law firm is even preparing for a class-action lawsuit against Apple and is soliciting iPhone 4 customers to contact them about reception issues.

Here’s the full text of the document as reported:

1. Keep all of the positioning statements in the BN handy – your tone when delivering this information is important.

a. The iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. Our testing shows that iPhone 4’s overall antenna performance is better than iPhone 3GS.

b. Gripping almost any mobile phone in certain places will reduce its reception. This is true of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, and many other phones we have tested. It is a fact of life in the wireless world.

c. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 3GS, avoid covering the bottom-right side with your hand.

d. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 4, avoid covering the black strip in the lower-left corner of the metal band.

e. The use of a case or Bumper that is made out of rubber or plastic may improve wireless performance by keeping your hand from directly covering these areas.

2. Do not perform warranty service. Use the positioning above for any customer questions or concerns.
3. Don’t forget YOU STILL NEED to probe and troubleshoot. If a customer calls about their reception while the phone is sitting on a table (not being held) it is not the metal band.
4. ONLY escalate if the issue exists when the phone is not held AND you cannot resolve it.
5. We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers – DON’T promise a free bumper to customers.

What do you think?

So have you been in line for the new Apple iPhone 4G? Are you in line right now?

Well you might want to look around and see if you recognize anyone famous. There were even a few celebrity sightings since the powerful new phone was released.

Yesterday morning, former Arrested Development star Jason Bateman joined a line of 2,000 outside a Los Angeles Apple store. As people in line realized who he was, they began posting their celebrity sighting to Twitter. As word traveled up the line, one person wrote, “No VIP line for the iPhone 4. Jason Bateman(actor) [sic] is 100 people behind me.”

Before long, Apple employees reportedly pulled Bateman out of line and escorted him into the store ahead of all the other customers. “Everyone literally started booing and hissing!” a source told US Magazine.

Hey… I say, anyone willing to kiss Dustin Hoffman should be allowed some perks!

After the much awaited arrival of the new iPhone 4G there have been a ton of complaints and barbs pointed at newest cell phone technology

After the much awaited arrival of the new iPhone 4G there have been a ton of complaints and barbs pointed at newest cell phone technology. Most of these complaints point out the lower left corner of the iPhone 4’s antenna-housing stainless-steel rim being extremely sensitive to human skin, so much so that your AT&T reception may drop precipitously when you hold the phone on the left side. Steve Jobs‘ advice: Don’t hold it like that. That’s the response Ars Technica got from a query to Apple corporate — with Jobs cc’d — about the iPhone 4’s widely reported issues, which seem to strike if your hand covers the lower left corner of the phone, particularly near a thin black stripe across the steel band that rings the phone.

For the record, Jobs’ exact reply to Ars was: “All phones have sensitive areas. Just avoid holding it that way.”

“Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.”

Brilliant!

Why didn’t we think of that?
