The finishing touch of a most amazing Masters was Charl Schwartzel slipping into a green jacket. Until that moment late Sunday afternoon, everything else at Augusta National was up for grabs.

The roars came from everywhere, for everyone, and never stopped.

Tiger Woods made up a seven-shot deficit in nine holes – too bad it was the front nine. Geoff Ogilvy ran off five straight birdies. Rory McIlroy matched the greatest collapse in Masters history with a stretch of holes not even Greg Norman would want to watch.

It was so wild that eight players had at least a share of the lead on the back nine.

Schwartzel emerged from all this madness with a magical touch of his own. He became the first Masters champion in its 75-year history to finish with four straight birdies, giving him a 6-under 66 for the best final round by a winner in 22 years.

The green jacket ceremony wasn’t so much a celebration as a chance for everyone to catch their breath.

“There’s so many roars that go on around Augusta,” Schwartzel said. “Especially the back nine. It echoes through those trees. There’s always a roar. Every single hole you walk down, someone has done something. And I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t looking at the leaderboard.”

At times, it was nearly impossible to keep up.

There was a five-way lead at the top at one point, and only the final hour sorted it all out.

Schwartzel didn’t have the lead to himself until he knocked in a 10-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole, then put just the right touch on a memorable Sunday with one final birdie putt that only counted toward the final margin.

He won by two shots over Adam Scott and Jason Day, a pair of Australians who didn’t drop a single shot on the back nine.

“Just an exciting day,” Schwartzel said. “So many roars, and that atmosphere out there was just incredible. A phenomenal day.”

Indeed, this final round had it all.

There was the fist-pumping charge by Tiger Woods that was slowed by two putts he missed from inside 4 feet. There was Luke Donald, dumping his tee shot into the pond at No. 12 only to make four birdies over the last six holes, chipping in on the last one.

And then there was McIlroy, whose 80 in the final round might be remembered as much for the classy way he handled it all.

Still leading by one shot as he headed to the back nine, McIlroy hit a tee shot next to the cabins left of the 10th fairway and twice hit a tree to make triple bogey. He three-putted from 7 feet for bogey on the 11th, four-putted from about 12 feet on the next hole and buried his head into his forearm as the shock began to settle in.

McIlroy had the highest final round by a 54-hole leader since Ken Venturi in 1956. Not since Jean Van de Velde at Carnoustie had someone lost at least a four-shot lead going into the last round of the major.

“It’s never nice to be leading a tournament and do what I did today,” McIlroy said.

On the course he looked as though he wanted to hide. After the round, he looked everyone in the eye and answered every question.

The steady hand came from Schwartzel, whose only bogey came on the fourth hole as this Masters was just getting warmed up. He made par on 10 consecutive holes when he began his great run.

Schwartzel got up-and-down from behind the 15th green for birdie to briefly tie for the lead, only for Scott to stuff his tee shot into 2 feet up ahead on the par-3 16th. Schwartzel answered with a 15-foot birdie to catch Scott atop the leaderboard again.

Then came the pivotal 17th, where Schwartzel took the lead, and he finished it off in style.

South Africans now have won two of the last three majors, following Louis Oosthuizen winning at St. Andrews last summer. This one came on the 50th anniversary of Gary Player becoming the first international player to win the Masters.

“I am absolutely delighted for Charl and South Africa. Congratulations and very well done to him. That is how you finish like a champion!” Player said on Twitter.

In so many respects, this looked more like 1986 when Jack Nicklaus charged on the back nine to win a sixth green jacket over a Hall of Fame cast of contenders. There were twice as many possibilities at this Masters, though, from Woods and former Masters champion Angel Cabrera, from Ogilvy and Donald, from K.J. Choi and Bo Van Pelt, who made two eagles on the back nine.

Schwartzel set the tone early when he chipped in from some 75 feet across the green for birdie on the opening hole, then holed out from the fairway on No. 3 for eagle. Just like that, McIlroy’s four-shot lead was gone.

The cheers were impossible for McIlroy to ignore.

From the second green, where he was scrambling to make par, McIlroy could hear the noise ahead of him for Schwartzel’s eagles. Moments later came another roar to his right on the seventh green, where Woods stuffed one close for another birdie.

Woods’ red shirt looked a little brighter. He walked a little taller. And the cheers kept coming.

The biggest boom from the gallery came on the par-5 eighth, when Woods knocked in an eagle putt to reach 10 under and tie for the lead. There was no mistaking that sound, or who it was for.

Over the next few minutes, more cheers could be heard from all corners of Augusta each time Woods’ score was posted on a leaderboard. He still had the back nine to play, and momentum was on his side.

Not for long, though.

He missed a 3-foot par putt on the 12th, failed to birdie the par-5 13th with a 7-iron for his second shot. Then, after twirling his 7-iron with a shot so pure it settled 4 feet away on the par-5 15th, he missed the 4-foot eagle putt.

Woods closed with a 67, his best final round ever here. But he shot a 36 on the back nine, and that doesn’t win the Masters, certainly not this one.

“I got off to a nice start there and posted 31,” he said. “And then on the back nine, could have capitalized some more.”

Which shot would he like to have back?

“Oh, we can’t do that,” Woods said. “We do that every week and we would go crazy, wouldn’t we?”

Schwartzel finished at 14-under 274 and moves to No. 11 in the world, making him the No. 1 player in South Africa. He becomes the sixth South African to win a major.

“It’s been such a short time to think about what can happen. It’s a dream for me,” Schwartzel said. “It’s obviously the highlight of my golf career, by a long way. I always thought if there was one I would win, it would be this one.”

For Scott and Day, it was bitter disappointment for themselves and their country. The Masters is the only major an Australian has never won, and it has become a rallying cry for so many players who watched Norman endure years of heartache.

Scott, who switched to a long putter in February, took the lead for the first time with a short birdie on the 14th and had the look of a winner with his tee shot to tap-in range on the 16th, and a clutch par save from the bunker on the 17th.

He missed his 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole that he ran 4 feet by and settled for a 67.

“I don’t think I can ask for anything more,” Scott said. “I had a putt at it at the last – not my best, but everything else was pretty good today.”

Day came to life at the end with consecutive birdies that allowed him to shoot 68 and join Scott at 12-under 276. He hugged his wife before going into the scoring hut, only to see Schwartzel play the 18th without any drama.

“I couldn’t do anymore than what I just did today,” Day said. “Charl played even better golf.”

Woods tied for fourth at the Masters for the second straight year, joined by Ogilvy (67) and Luke Donald (69). Ogilvy ran off five consecutive birdies on the back nine – unforgettable at any other Masters but this one filled with so many highlights. Donald was in the mix until hitting 9-iron into Rae’s Creek on the 12th for double bogey.

He rebounded beautifully, however, and showed his greatest emotion on the 18th. With an awkward lie near the bunker, he scooped a shot that hit the flag and bounced back off the green, and Donald chipped in for birdie.

Ultimately, though, it was Schwartzel slipping into a green jacket.

UPDATE: The European Tour has fined Tiger Woods for spitting on the green of the 12th hole on Sunday. Tournament director Mike Stewart reportedly said that “there has been a breach” of conduct. The amount of the fine has not been revealed.

Tiger apologized for the incident on twitter.

“The Euro Tour is right,” he tweeted. “It was inconsiderate to spit like that and I know better. Just wasn’t thinking and want to say I’m sorry.”

In the final round of the Dubai Desert Classic, Tiger Woods crouched over and spit on the 12th green after missing a par putt.

“Disgusting, what he has just done there,” said Sky Sports commentator Ewen Murray. “But there are some parts of him that are just arrogant and petulant. Somebody now has to come behind him and maybe putt over his spit. It does not get much lower than that.”

Murray also described the spitting incident as “one of the ugliest things you will ever see on a golf course.”

According to Sportinglife.com, Murray expects Woods to be fined.

Tiger went on to struggle in the final round and finish seven strokes behind winner Alvaro Quiros.

Europe reclaimed the Ryder Cup on Monday as U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell won the final singles match at Celtic Manor to hold off a late charge by the Americans.

The Americans rallied from a three-point deficit to tie the score, bringing it down to the 12th match. But McDowell made a clutch birdie putt at the 16th and was conceded his par putt at No. 17. Hunter Mahan flubbed a chip shot, then missed a last-gasp putt from off the green to save par.

The Europeans won 14 1/2-13 1/2 to reclaim the cup won by the Americans at Valhalla two years ago.

The youngest American, 21-year-old Rickie Fowler, gave the visiting team hope of pulling off an improbable comeback when he won the final three holes to halve his match with Edoardo Molinari. Fowler rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt at the 17th to extend the match, then made an 18-footer at the final hole to stun the Italian.

A few minutes later, Zach Johnson finished off a 3-and-2 win over Padraig Harrington, evening the score at 13 1/2.

That brought it down to McDowell vs. Mahan.

The Northern Irishman was 3 up with seven holes left. But he made a bogey at No. 12, then an errant tee shot at the 15th, a short par-4, handed Mahan another hole.

With Fowler’s half-point, Mahan merely had to halve his match for a 14-14 tie that would’ve kept the trophy in American hands.

But McDowell rolled in a slick, downhill putt from 15 feet at No. 16 for a brilliant birdie. When Mahan made a mess of the 17th hole, the winner didn’t even have to bother with his final putt.

“There was a reason why he was put there,” Ian Poulter said of having McDowell in the final spot. “He’s the U.S. Open champion. He pulled it off.”

McDowell was engulfed by his teammates on the green, but perhaps the biggest cheers were reserved for European captain Colin Montgomerie. One of Europe’s greatest Ryder Cup players, he now has a win leading the team in what he called the highlight of his career before it even started.

The Europeans then set off on a victory lap back to the clubhouse behind the 18th green, where they sprayed the fans with champagne from a second-floor balcony, serenaded by chants of “Ole! Ole! Ole!”

“We came close,” U.S. captain Corey Pavin said, “but we didn’t quite get there.”

Great news for Tiger Woods’ penis. The womanizing golfer has finalized his divorce from long-suffering wife Elin Nordegren. Yay, strippers, cocktail waitresses, and pornstars, rejoice! Free lapdances for all!

Both Elin, 30, and Tiger, 34, were reportedly present at the Bay County Circuit Court in Panama City, Florida on Monday morning as their six-year union was dissolved, ending months of rumors that followed Woods’ almost career-ending sex scandal. The Woods Clan found themselves on the working side of the headlines when Tiger was accused of bedding more than a dozen women — and Elin was accused of causing a car crash when she attacked him with a golf club — in a far-reaching scandal that dominated the news in late 2009.

“Elin Nordegren and Tiger Woods confirmed today that they have divorced. Judgment was entered today in Bay County (Florida) Circuit Court dissolving the marriage,” the law firm of McGuireWoods confirmed. “The judgment provides for shared parenting of their two children”

The former couple released a joint statement as the story hit news wires early Monday afternoon:

“We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future. While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness has been, and will always be, of paramount importance to both of us. Once we came to the decision that our marriage was at an end, the primary focus of our amicable discussions has been to ensure their future well-being. The weeks and months ahead will not be easy for them as we adjust to a new family situation, which is why our privacy must be a principal concern.”

Settlement details have not been disclosed, but various reports say Elin could walk away with more than $100 million in assets.

Tiger and Elin will share custody of their two kids, Sam Alexis, 3, and one-year-old Charlie Axel.

Rachel Uchitel (34), the celebrity mistress and former NYC party hostess with romantic ties to shamed sportsman Tiger Woods and Bones star David Boreanaz is halfway through the six-week production of VH1’s Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew Pinsky (51), which is set to air next year. However, instead of conquering the “pill addiction” for which she checked into Pinsky’s Pasadena Recovery Center seeking treatment, we hear Uchitel’s more interested in figuring out how to manuever her way into Drew’s shorts.

TMZ.com wrote Monday: “Sources tell us after Rachel initially turned down “Rehab” — Dr. Drew wanted a personal sit-down to change her mind … and she only agreed to the meeting because she says she has a mad crush on him. So, now Drew has Rachel where he wants her … and Rachel’s got Drew right where she wants him. Rehab just got way more complicated.”

Louis Oosthuizen (27) walked over the Swilcan Bridge toward a victory that was never in doubt Sunday at St. Andrews, another big moment in sports for South Africa.

This celebration, though, carried a different tune.

The drone of vuvuzelas, all the rage at the World Cup, was replaced by the skirl of bagpipes coming from behind the Royal & Ancient clubhouse. For the 27-year-old South African, the sound could not have been sweeter.

With a performance that rivaled the dominance of Tiger Woods at the home of golf 10 years ago, Oosthuizen led over the final 48 holes and blew away the field by seven shots to capture the British Open.

“To win an Open championship is special,” Oosthuizen said. “But to win it at St. Andrews … it’s something you dream about.”

The timing could not have been better – one week after South Africa concluded a wildly popular World Cup, and the day Nelson Mandela celebrated his 92nd birthday.

“It felt a bit special, really,” he said. “When I walked down 18, I was thinking about his birthday.”

By then, the hard work was done. Oosthuizen (WUHST’-hy-zen) made only two bogeys over the final 35 holes in a strong wind that swept across the Old Course. He closed with a 1-under 71 for a seven-shot victory over Lee Westwood, who was never in the game.

The only challenge came from Paul Casey, who got within three shots after the eighth hole, then drove the green on the par-4 ninth. Oosthuizen answered by hitting driver onto the green and knocking in a 50-foot eagle putt to restore his cushion.

LeBron James was the butt of the ESPY awards’ biggest jokes Wednesday night.

Host Seth Meyers was the first to reap the benefits of the former free agents’ lengthy ESPN announcement on July 8 of his decision to choose the Miami Heat as his next team.

“Did it really need to be an hour?” Meyers said. “Somebody time me. Miami. How long did that take? A second.”

The “Saturday Night Live” star later offered some support to the basketball stars’ former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“Literally every team that has ever won an NBA championship has done it without LeBron James,” he quipped.

But Meyers wasn’t the only celebrity to take pot shots at James. “Dinner for Schmucks” stars Steve Carrell and Paul Rudd offered up a parody of his one-hour ESPN special.

Before revealing his big decision to a bearded Rudd, Carell said he used an eight-ball to make his final choice.

“I’ve decided I am going to take my appetite to the Outback Steakhouse,” he said.

In another surprise move, Phil Mickelson won the award for best male golfer, stealing what would have been Tiger Woods’ 23rd win.

“We all know which free agent is making the most money this summer — [Woods's wife] Elin Nordegren,” Meyers joked of Woods’ ex-wife, who is reportedly set to get hundreds of millions from their divorce settlement.

Another highlight involved Andy Samberg arriving on stage dressed up as Paul, the octopus who predicted that Spain would win the World Cup.

As for the big winners of the night, New Orleans Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees picked up four awards while Los Angeles’ Galaxy soccer star Landon Donovan took home three wins.

TMZ has learned that Elin Nordegren will be worth a cool $100 million after everything is said and done with Tiger Woods.

TMZ has learned that Elin Nordegren will be worth a cool $100 million after everything is said and done with Tiger Woods.

As one source with direct knowledge of the terms of the divorce tells TMZ, “She’ll be getting close to $100,000,000.”

There have been reports Elin would score $750 million, but we have confirmed that figure is wrong. Indeed, as we first reported, Tiger is not even worth $750 million. We’re told his net worth is somewhere between $500 and $600 million.

The $100 million is way more than Elin would have received under the prenup.

Sources say Elin will receive child support, but we do not know the specific amount.

As for the $100 million figure … this is not speculation … it comes from sources with direct knowledge of the property settlement agreement.

To put this in some perspective, Elin will be getting 10 times what Rachel Uchitel scored from Tiger.
